credit card info. private?

hi, i've got a quick question about credit card number security.. as it
is, all data about the user including their credit card number is kept in
the user database. windows really isn't all that secure, and the credit
card info. could be obtained by outside people. is it possible to keep
the cc numbers on a floppy disk or other external location, and only plug
them in when it's time to use them?
