I know this sounds aweful, and all of the other posts about money are very
true, and valid - but, if you really are unsure of what to buy, I'd
recommend one of two things:

1) Find someone who is more knowledgeable then you about the ISP marketplace
to partner with, including network setup, design, software implementation,
etc. and work with him/her to get yourself up and running.

2) Don't get into the business.

I know those sound like two harsh ways of going about it, but you are at a
disadvantage:

1) Competition is already fierce.
2) Strong knowledge base is required about equipment, not only for
maintaining it, but also for providing tech support to your clients.
3) Leased lines, telephone trunks, etc. are NOT cheap, aside from needing to
spend a fortune on installation and on monthly costs - if you don't know or
understand the gear you have, you could find yourself paying for things you
can't use until you figure out the hardware.
4) There is a huge upfront cost in getting going. And, unless you are very
cautious, and buy the right hardware the first time around, you're going to
be doubling your expenses (which is why it's good to find someone with
experience in the field to partner with).

Gaining suggestions from others is not a bad thing, but you need to have
someone that really understands these requirements to work with.

Yes, you can learn them yourself along the way, but it is an expensive
learning process.

And the suggestion of $300K isnt a bad one. Personally, I'd say start with
$150K in the bank, and have access to an additional $150K somehow - either
via future investments, or invested in CD's or something where you will have
access to it within a year at most, in case of emergency.

This is no longer one of the best growth markets to be in. Back in about 94
or 95 was the best time to open ones doors, as that is when some of the
strongest growth occured, and when ISP's earned more money per customer,
etc. There is still growth today, but there are a lot of bigboys out there,
with more phone lines, faster connections, 24 hr tech support, etc.

I'm not trying to scare you away from the field (although it may sound like
it) - I'm just trying to prepare you so you are aware of some of the
situations you are entering into.
