Getting feet wetFrom: Joseph D''Andrea Date: Sunday, April 20, 1997
Time: 11:14:00 pmI run a macOS server with webstar and EIMS. I use ClearlyHome for virtual
hosting, and all the e-mail account names are unique so there is no need
for any SMTP virtual hosting. I currently have three domains registered for
which my ISP provides primary and secondary service. They all map to the
same static address.
My ISP charges me mucho dinero every time I add a new domain. Now I need to
add another domain and I want to do it myself. (I know I have to register
it with the InterNIC.)
My ISP provides name service for my main domain, domainA.com. They have an
SOA record and an A record which point to the IP address. They also have a
CNAME for www.domainA.com and ftp.domainA.com. There is an MX record which
points to domainA.com. (Again, all the services are running on the same
mac.)
I want to run QuickDNS for a new domain, domainB. Here's how I think it
will be set-up:
domainB.com SOA ?????
domainB.com A 111.111.111.111
www.domainB.com CNAME domainB.com
domainB.com MX domainA.com
------^ --------------^
The questions are: 1) Am I on the right track? 2) Do I need an actual
machine name in the SOA record? 3) If I put a hostname in the SOA record,
do I just define it with another CNAME? 4) Anyone have any particular
pitfalls that a DNS newbie should watch out for?
Thanks,
___Joe___
