Secondary DNS & Systems RedundancyFrom: Danny Grizzle Date: Friday, May 9, 1997
Time: 8:36:00 pmA thought for increasing reliability of Mac hosting services.
Problem: Redundancy improves reliability. For example, the Secondary DNS
required by the InterNIC for all domain name registrations. Only, my
Secondary is on the same LAN, the same router, the same ISDN, the same
connection, and the same AC power as my primary. Result: the only
redundancy I have is protection against a system crash on my Primary Mac
server.
I think many other QuickDNS Pro users are in the same boat.
Rather than resorting to the cost and lack of control of contracting with a
typically Mac illiterate ISP to maintain our Secondary DNS, perhaps
QuickDNS users should pair off in a "buddy system" to exchange secondary
services for one another.
While we are at it, why not also name each other (in QuickDNS) as backup
mailservers. It only stands to reason that if I were to lose AC power or
suffer an ISDN cable cut for a time, I would not like to bounce my clients
e-mail.
Another application might be to monitor each other's equipment, using
something like Maxum's PageSentry.
Does such a proposal sound feasible from a technical and QuickDNS licensing
standpoint? The main hassle would seem to be changing secondary assignments
at the InterNIC for all the affected domains.
Thanks,
Danny Grizzle
