First, a counterpoint:
We've seen no problems at all from QuickDNS Pro 1.1.x or the version 2 beta.
Config: PowerMac 7100/80, System 7.5.5, OT 1.1.1, 24 MB RAM, 4 MB allocated
to QuickDNS, basic extensions, ...plus...
WebSTAR 1.3.1, eg.acgi 1.?, NetCloak 1.2, EIMS 1.2, FTPd 2.4, Timbuktu Pro
3.0.2, BBEdit Lite 3.5, MacsBug, and, of course, QuickDNS Pro.
We experience no freezes, from QuickDNS pro or anything else. (We do
rarely drop into MacsBug when someone clicks and drags an icon in the
Finder with another app initially in the foreground, but that's easy to
notice, and to avoid when you know about the problem. :-)
The big loads on the machine are mail and web hits. It is the main mail
and web server for the company.
The machine is also the main DNS resolver for a 60+ employee internet
development company (people get paid to surf, even). It is listed first at
the InterNIC for external host to IP requests about the company's domains
as well. We serve 3 primary domains off of it, plus about 12 secondaries
now.
I think it unlikely, but might the crucial difference between our setups be
a 68k vs PPC deal?
Suggestions:
Do the freezes continue after a clean, virgin install of your System software?
Have you considered upgrading to (a clean install of) System 7.5.5, and OT
1.1.1 or 1.1.2?
Have you run the "Get Machine Info" utility provided with QuickDNS, and
mailed the output to Men and Mice with your request for help in figuring
out what is causing your freezes? They might be able to pinpoint specific
problems with the versions of the basic extensions you're running.
