Of all your questions, I only have an answer for this one.

When a host need name resolution, it asks its DNS server. It sends a
"recursive" request, meaning it wants the server to do all the work.
However, if, for whatever reason, it doesn't get a full answer, it needs to
be able to do the work itself. Windows can't. MacOS can, with both Open
Transport and MacTCP.

The difference is that Windows doesn't know how to issue iterative queries
and follow up on the answers. The resolver built into the MacOS (the hidden
system extension MacTCP DNR) does know how to do this.
