According to whose dictionary? According to mine "American Heritage
English Dictionary", and "Merriam Webster" the word past tense of "cancel"
is:
-celed or -celled; -celing or celling
Both are proper spellings of the same word. The words roots are from the
Middle English "cancellan", the Middle French "canceller", the Late Latin
"cancellare", and from Latin, to make like a lattice.
Neither is more proper than the other. Using two l's is historically more
correct while the the most generally accepted spelling today is with one.
