The behavior you are describing is not normal for QuickDNS Pro. It would be helpful if you could contact our support department (support@menandmice.com) with any additional details so we can try to figure out what is causing this.
As for memory allocation for the server, it is a good rule of thumb to have 1 MB or more memory available for the cache when the server has just been started. You can see how much memory is available for the cache by checking the field "Free memory" in the QuickDNS Server status window.
