You must have an A record for MX entries. If you don't, some mail servers will refuse to connect. I'm not sure who/what is telling you that multiple A records pointing to the same IP is a no-no. The only issue is that the reverse lookup on the IP can only return one name, and that could be an issue. However, what I did on my DNS/EIMS machine is set the PTR to return the mail name, since a lot of mail servers now do reverse lookups to combat spam. Haven't had a problem since.
