This is a good possible explanation. However, I did switch the hub out with an identical unit during my diagnostics, but that did not solve the problem. I didn't change cables, but then the hub still exhibited the massive utilization even when all cables were detached except for the thin net backbone that connects it to the router.

The solution to the problem was waiting. After about 40 hours of the utilization spiking on the public hub it just calmed down suddenly. I just looked over and noticed that the five LED meter was dark, except for the occasional green blip or small spike. That's the normal pattern.

As soon as I noticed that, I relaunched both copies of QDNS and everything was back to normal. Very strange...

I don't know what caused all this, but I can't rule out that it was some kind of attack. I'm thinking about installing one of those hardware firewall appliances with a web interface for administration. I have a network engineer friend who raves about one that he just installed. Any suggestions on what device to get? I think they cost about $2000.

Thanks to everyone on the list who replied with helpful suggestions. Sigfus from Menandmice contacted me twice and was also very helpful.
