The exception is the CNAME record - you can chain CNAME records, though
nobody recommends this practice.
To reiterate, you can't use a name that has a CNAME record anywhere else,
except in another CNAME record. This includes putting it in the data
portion of another record, or in the name portion. A CNAME alias, for
example, can't have an MX record or an NS record.
To answer George's original question more fully, you can't use an IP
address in any record except an A record.
