The root servers are distributed across the world, though a good portion of them are in the US. Some of them are hosted at NetSol, at least two are hosted by the US military, one (actually a RAIC) is hosted by isc.org (distributors of BIND), and so forth. I'm fairly certain at least two are in Europe, and one is in Japan.

QuickDNS will start by querying all of the root servers. After that, except for occasional retrying of all of them, it will only use the most responsive root server.
