DOS attacks

How exactly do DOS attacks (Denial Of Service) work?

My primary Mac uses VicomSoft's SoftRouter Plus which blocks DOS attacks, but
I don't know how it does it. Are DOS attacks on a certain port #, or are they
a high number of TCP/IP requests designed to overload your system, or
something else?

Apparently MacOS 9 has better TCP/IP handling. Anyone know if this helps in
DOS attacks?

I'm shopping for firewalls for my other two Macs. I'll probably buy a
hardware firewall to cover both. How risky is it to run a DNS server or FMP
server without a firewall? I know many people who don't use a firewall and
have never had a problem (probably because DOS attackers have not found them
yet). I think some upstream ISPs already put you behind some limited firewall
protections.

Any comments and thoughts are appreciated, as well as firewall suggestions!
Thanks!

Eric.
