Nope. The above is not correct.
RFC 1035, in section 2.3.1, defines what characters are allowed in subdomain names (i.e. in domain names, between periods). The allowable letters are alphanumeric and "-", and you can't start with a "-".
According to DNS & BIND, the *hostmaster* field (which does not contain a hostname) is not limited by these restrictions, though this contradicts RFC 1035. Obviously, RFC 1035 has been updated by a later RFC, but I don't know which one in particular changed this rule.
