Recursive query delays

I'm wondering if anyone can suggest where should I start looking to track
down why my offsite queries are taking so long? I'm now stumpped.

My Setup:
2Mbps fiber connection, 100baseT Asante NIC's and Asante 10/100 switch
(Intraswitch 6224).

Applw 7200/90 88Mb RAM, 1MB L2Cache
OS 8.6
Running:
-QDNS Pro 2.21
-SIMS 1.8b7 (mail server)
-Letterip (list server)
- have tried allocating various amounts of RAM to QDNS pro from defaults to
15MB with no affect

I have also installed QuickDNS Pro on our webserver which is a:
Apple 7200/90 120MB RAM, 1MB L2cache
WS4D 2.11
SiteEdit ACGI
QDNSPro 2.21

-All of our domains respond to queries between 10 and 20ms - so far so good.
-However random sites chosen that are not cached either don't resolve the
first time or take between 20,000 and 35,000 ms
-Sending the same query again to our DNS nets a reply in 10 to 20ms from the
cache just like it was one of our own domains.
-Sending the same queries to our connection providers secondary server
yields a 800-3000ms query on initial queries and 20ms on subsequent queries
from it's cache.
-Sending the same queries to a PSInet DNS yields 300-400ms on the initial
query and ~100ms on subsequent queries.

We've been using them for a few years without any problems. The slowness
only seems to be since we moved from one fiber connection to another one,
but I can't see how that could create a problem.
