I assume these customer.com records have names that end in a period ("customer.com.") in your actual records. If so...

This ought to work. However, handling of CNAME records can be inconsistent - some client programs just don't follow the rules.

To work around this problem, try this record instead:
mail.customer.com. A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
