It's mostly just a matter of easy maintenance vs speed. CNAME's if used carefully, can make it easier to maintain large numbers of names, especially if you ever have to change an address.

This is likely the problem. DNS Expert's analyzer uses the same basic algorithm that a TCP/IP stack's DNS resolver uses.

Use the DNS Query tool to trace the delegation, looking for servers that should be authoritative but don't claim to be. (Note that delegation records are reported as non-authoritative.)

No.

Any number of things. Most likely, delegation problems.
