I saw that in one of the RFC's as a design goal, but in practice it can be unworkable due to the restrictions placed on CNAME aliases.
DNS wasn't designed with the idea of more than one name per machine - it was designed before the ".com" madness, before the concept of hosting multiple websites on one machine...
