Resolver Problems

Greetings Listers!

I've recently been trying to set up a QuickDNS Pro server to replace our

MacDNS server for internal name serving and to forward queries to our
ISP (UUnet) for external names.

It seems to work fine for internal names but is unable to successfully
handle forwarding queries on to an external name server . Our network
sits behind CheckPoint Firewall-1 4.0 but I don't believe that this is a

simple firewall problem since both MacDNS and a Linux DNS work. Indeed
nslookup even works from the box that is running QuickDNS.

Our firewall consultants have run some snoop sessions for me and tell me

that they observe packets leaving our firewall, arriving at their test
DNS and even leaving their DNS. However they never arrive back at our
firewall. They're not being dropped, they just don't arrive. However if
I place QDNS outside the firewall it can resolve queries OK so the
firewall is having some effect.

I guess the question is what does QuickDNS do differently from MacDNS
that makes Firewall-1 mangle its query packets so that the response
packets get lost on the way back?

Men and Mice support are looking into this (thanks Sigurdur), but any
suggestions from the wider community gratefully received.

Thanks
