some problems with quickdns

hello,

i am trying to switch our dns system compltely from linux bind to qdns and encounter some severe problems.

i am too reading the qdns mailing list but did not find hints or a solution for the problems, yet;-)

we have by now 3 dns servers running. a hidden primary and two public dns one primary, the other secondary (which are really secondarys). one of the secondary has two ip adresses. together we are running about 200 domains an secondary services for another 20 domains. server hardware are g3 servers with macos 9 and asip 6.3 and one pm8100. qdns v.2.1 is in use and has by now only 16mb ram, because by now the public primary is still on linux. management worgstations are mostly ppc604 machines (starmax).

i would be very glad to get some help on the following issues (perhaps iam doing something wrong):

the admin tool is simply unusable in an distributed production environment. even on our internal switched 100baseT network, where the hidden primary is located, it needs about 2 minutes to start and read the zone files and about 30 seconds for a single zone file to save. every time the primary zones window goes to the background the admin tool freezes again for a minute. as we have many changes each day it costs much to much time.

over our dsl line conected servers (256kbit/s) the admin tool needs 10 minutes or more to load the zone files and is a pain to work with a single zone file. we have to use timbuktu to start the admin tool locally on the servers and/or to use finder copys, which is a security risk.

the secondary domains managment is different from the one for the primary domains. it is not possible to copy a primary qdns file to another qdns servers secondary domain folder. this interdicts the use of some replication software to distribute zone files automatically.

why doesnt it use the same mechanism as with the primary domains?

since qdns is running on the pm8100 the machine hardcrashes once a week. it is running macos 9e, stalker internet mailserver 1.7 ppc and qdns as secondary (for better mail performance). the machine has been very stable without qdns. are there any known issuses about that.

i would realy like to use a database for domain management, i have seen scripts to make a new primary zone file but how to make a secondary one?

when using the domain assistant to create a virtual domain i got dozens of duplicatel ns and mx records. the zonefile used as master contains only 4 ns records and 3 mx records, but about 100 a and cname records.

if you need more information on the issues i would be glad to give it to you.
