Warning!!! registrar shenanigansFrom: Navarsky Eliezer Date: Wednesday, February 9, 2000
Time: 11:11:00 pmShalom everybody,
Be warned - DO NOT use the whois interfaces provided by the
domain name registrars!
2 days ago I checked the availability of a domain name
through Network Solutions Inc's web site. Today I went back
to register this same domain name and was unpleasantly
surprised to learn that the domain name was no longer
available. I was even more surprised to learn that the new
owners (as of yesterday) were Network Solutions Inc themselves!
It appears as if they go over the whois interface logs and
when they see a "tasty morsel" that is still up for grabs
they just gobble it up... I don't know for sure if they
really do but I hate "coincidences" like this one.
Likewise, I have no knowledge about the other registrars
doing the same dirty trick (if it is, in fact, a low blow)
but with domain names going rate in the millions it is
better not to take any chances.
Feel free to post this warning to other lists (it is cross
posted by myself to the WebMaster-Mac list and to the
QuickDNS Talk list).
If anybody has any knowledge about what can be done in this
particular instance - please let me know.
The really bad part is that my client is mad at me and is
considering dropping me - he just happens to be my biggest
single source of income :-(
Thanks
Eliezer Navarsky
