Advice, Guidance and Counsel? From: Paul Helm Date: Tuesday, February 15, 2000
Time: 9:31:00 pmHere's the story:
We have been retained to work on a project that involves staffing a Pre-IPO,
internet based, start-up services provider of domain registration. The
company plans to enter the business of registering Domain Names and plans to
introduce new and innovative registration services. The Company aims to
build the systems and infrastructure to support these services. These
systems will have to perform the operations of name registration and
interfaces to Root Servers and shared registration systems, client-side
components that aid in the process of registration and access,
administration and collection systems, web services and e-commerce sites.
The company believes its patent pending technology will give it a
proprietary position in the market for registering domain names.
Here's the dilema:
Where do we go to talk with creative experts in the development of this type
of technology in such a young and narrow field. We are working for an
intellectual PhD. with the proverbial "laundry list" of requirements. He,
the CEO and COO, are well-recognized information systems experts. They have
been pioneers in the areas of electronic publishing, database systems,
imaging systems, and development of "cutting-edge" information systems.
We are charged with establishing the technical teams that will design and
implement the systems that, under the direction of the COO, will be used
for domain registration.
Some of the essential "Server side" skills are:
Unix (Solaris, Linux, HP/UX, BSDI, FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD, etc.)
DNS (thorough), socket level, TCP/UDP programming
C/C++, system level programming
Daemon/Servers, distributed application
Domain name registration experience (very helpful if they have worked
for a registrar).
Also important are:
GNU development environment and tools
Unix system administration, large package development, installations and
maintenance
PERL, Java (applets, servlets, etc.)
Web/CGI, large commerce site, webmaster experience
Dynamic/remote updating applications
Database experience (Oracle, MS-SQL, Sybase, Informix, mSQL, )
Some of the essential "Server side" skills are:
Windows 9x and NT (Server/Workstation) administrationVisual C++, system
level programming, COM, multithreading
Winsock 1.x/2.x, TCP/UDP programming
DNS (thorough), Daemon/Servers
Application Internationalization/Localization
Also important are:
Unicode, NLS, ANSI, ISO
ATL, Win GUI, Installation
NSP/LSP (Winsock 2.x)
Distributed/Collaborative applications, Dynamic and remote updating
applications

Compensation packages for this retained search will be in the range
$70,000 - $110,000 base salary, plus Stock Options, Benefits and 401(k)
