Intelligent Fault-Tolerant ServingFrom: Suzanne Swift Date: Wednesday, February 23, 2000
Time: 2:30:00 amI'm trying to figure out how to set up a back-up Web server. Is this
called Intelligent Fault-Tolerant Serving or is this called Load Balancing?
What is the difference?
I've read some of the posts in this area, but I still don't understand how
it is done. Is there a tutorial/step-by-step instructions that I can
access somewhere?
I have two domains and two IP# blocs. Let's call them domain1.com and
domain2.com and 10.10.10.* and 20.20.20.*. My current name servers are at
ns1.domain1.com (10.10.10.2) and ns2.domain1.com (10.10.10.3).
I have two Web servers. Let's say their IPs are 10.10.10.10 and
20.20.20.10. I would like to set things up so that one server is the
workhorse, handling most or all of the traffic when it is up. If the
workhorse server (10.10.10.10) should suffer a catastrophe, however, then I
would like client traffic to be routed to 20.20.20.10. Finally, should
10.10.10.10 come back online, I would like traffic to be automatically
routed back.
How do I do this? I THINK the first thing I need may be another domain
name server - ns3.domain1.com - but in the second location, eg 20.20.20.2.
Is this right? And what comes next?
Once somebody explains this to me, it will probably seem straightforward
and simple, but it sure seems murky now.
