Re: Changing ISP for main DNSFrom: David Reynolds Date: Monday, April 10, 2000
Time: 11:01:53 amHi Asle,
You can change the name server ip using the host form at
http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/makechanges/itts/host
Once you change the ip for the host, it will automatically change over for
every domain.
As far as planning, I will assume you are running DNS, along with your web
server etc... on the same machine.
I'm going to be doing the same thing in about 2 weeks and I plan on having a
second server set up to handle DNS requests until my main DNS has all of its
ip's updated.
My second server is basically going to be a duplicate of the first.
With the main DNS on the new network (I'll be running 2 networks and
gradually moving machines to the new one) with all of its ip's changed over,
I'll then change the host record with the internic and wait. Once the
changes are complete and the internic's database is updated, everything
should be running fine on the new network.
I have around 80 domains and am running everything from one machine (DNS,
web server, etc..). Fortunately, I don't have other users logging in via
FTP and changing any sites, so there wont be any difference between the
secondary and main servers while I wait for the host record to change.
Another thing to keep in mind is make sure the sites you are hosting don't
use ip addresses for scripts, links, etc. I've only done this once before,
so maybe someone else can throw in some more info.
Hope this helps,
David
