Try Force-quitting (to see what's in the foreground) and/or Control
Power (to drop into MacsBug).

When do your freezes occur? Although QDNS does crash--very
infrequently--for us, we do observe problems sometimes when QDNS is
trying to start up when it's got many zones to load and it's being
pounded on by clients at the same time.

Send them to Men & Mice.

You might also try firewalling your DNS servers.
