Eudora (or any email client) doesn't read MX records. It just looks
at A and CNAME records.
So if you tell Eudora to send mail via 4D-Consulting.com, you'd
better have an A or CNAME record named 4D-Consulting.com that
resolves to your mail server. The same can be said for your POP3 or
IMAP server setting.
In order to track this down, you'd have to examine the following data:
o the settings in Eudora
o the DNS resolver settings in the TCP/IP control panel
o the DNS data relating to the settings in Eudora, according to the resolvers
A 30-60 second delay could be due to DNS resolution time-outs.
You say you can ping "them" without a larger delay than pinging other
domains. What exactly are you pinging? The domains themselves, or the
mail servers? Pinging a domain itself is likely to result in sending
ping packets to the web server for the domain, which may have nothing
whatsoever to do with mail service.
