FileMaker 5 issues

Hello folks,

We upgrade to FM5 over the weekend and are having a few
issues. I had been in contact with tech support when we
attempted to convert from the runtime to using FM3/FM4
server, but really didn't get anywhere. So, I thought
I'd try the list to see if anyone else here has
experienced these issues:

1. FileMaker with Server runs S-L-O-W!!!

Using FM5 Server on a PIII 500Mhz Machine with 128Mb
of RAM the files serve to clients using FM5 very, very
slowly - it takes upwards of 3 minutes to get to the
log on screen. We went through and tested protocols,
made sure there were no duplicate files, etc. when
we tried to convert to FM4 server. We gave up and went
back to the runtime, which wasn't speedy, but was faster
than using the FM4 server at the time.

We're on 100Mb switched ethernet internally, and our
network load isn't burdensome. When attempting the FM4
Server conversion we tried:

- Changing IP addresses
- Switching to a different server machine
- Several different clients
- ran cables direct from the server to the
switch (bypassing the internal building wiring)
- same thing re: cabling for workstations
- changed to IPX protocol instead of IP

Any ideas or suggestions would be great!

2. How can we get single icon load functionality using
FM5 on the clients, rather than going through the file/open/
hosts dialog?

Thanks!
Tom Fox
