Well... if you go through PayNet, you can get your VeriSign account for
cheaper. $39 (instead of $59) per month for up to 5,000 or $699 (instead of
$999) for unlimited.

Now for the guts of the reason... Since VeriSign does not have the ability
to answer a query as to how many transactions have already been run, you
would have to limit all processing to a single instance of the plug-in on a
single machine (no web interface usage either). Then have that instance
track how many have been run and handle the roll-overs. To be honest, I
think such a thing would be much more hassle than it is worth.

Let's say you were running 10,000 transactions (even at the retail cost of
$999). That works out to $0.10 per transaction. Authorize.Net and
Cybercash charge right around $0.20 per transactions for ALL transactions
just for the gateway service.

If you want to get around paying the gateway fees, the only one that is
cheap for unlimited transactions is Cardservice's LinkPoint ($20 per month
flat rate). But you MUST use a Cardservice merchant account (so that is
where they make their money).

Personally, I like VeriSign, we use VeriSign internally. While we never get
anywhere close to 5,000 transactions per month, we could get a gateway for
cheaper than the $59/month we pay (Bank of America eStores or Authorize.Net
would both work out to be cheaper). But I've have a lot of confidence in
VeriSign and it seems to be the fastest and most stable of any of the
gateways, so we pay the extra $30 per month (we could get a BofA gateway for
$19.95/month).

So yes, it *is* possible, but at what cost? Is the extra aggravation of
only being able to run credit cards through a single instance worth it? I
think it would be better to log into your VeriSign account once in awhile,
check how many transactions you have run and when you get to 4,000, switch
it to one of your other VeriSign accounts if you really want to do such a
thing. :-)
