OK, suppose you want to load balance www.example.com. In the
example.com domain, you already have an A record or CNAME record for
www.example.com. With the example.com zone window open:
Step 1: Remove the existing A or CNAME record for www.example.com; it
would otherwise conflict with the load balance record.
Step 2: From the Edit menu, open the Insert Record submenu and choose
Load Balance Record. A dialog box will appear.
Step 3: Enter the following values into the available fields:
Name: www
Time-to-live: 300
Interval: 30
Hostlife: 60
Step 4: Enter the IP address of each web server under "Host address".
In the Preference column, enter numbers such as 5 or 20 or whatever
for each server. Hits will be assigned proportionately.
Step 5: Make sure the "Slave servers" box has the correct settings;
most likely, what it says (if anything) will be correct.
Step 6: Click OK. Save the zone. Wait for the zone to load on the
primary server, then cause it to be loaded on the secondary server(s)
- restart them.
Step 7: Launch QuickDNS Pro Load Balancer on each server involved.
Make sure that it launches at boot time - put it in the Startup Items
folder, or in the Keep It Up Items folder (or whatever it's called),
or otherwise add it to the boot routine.
Step 8: Check your configuration using LB Tester, which is in the
Utilities folder.
