Re: QDNS and seti

For fun, I ran SETI (the version before 3.03) on all my servers for 2
months to see how it affected performance -- 333MHz beige G3 12-15 hr
averages, 400MHz b/w G3 9-12 hr averages & 500MHz b/w G3 6-9 hr
averages. SETI really didn't seem to affect latency times on pings and
traceroutes. My WebStar servers seemed a little slower to me when
accessed from remote broadband connections, but my "visitors" on modem
connections said they didn't notice anything. But my FMP server really
didn't like it at all because FMP needs to be the front application (or
things take more than 5 times longer). QDNS and SIMS are piggybacked on
two of those machines. I've since uninstalled SETI (fun's over), but if
you try it, be sure to personally check performance from remote
locations. My connection is a slower DSL so less CPU is required to
handle the connection, but I'd suspect that SETI interference will be
more noticeable on T1s and faster connections.
