Re: QuickDNS in the backgroundFrom: Men & Mice Support Date: Tuesday, March 27, 2001
Time: 1:44:31 pmShort answer: QuickDNS Pro operates just fine in the background. Our
original version, which ran under System 7.1, was fully responsive
even when a Finder copy was in the foreground. Back then, almost no
software could claim that.
Long, technical answer:
QuickDNS Pro Server handles queries at interrupt time. That means,
when a query or a response to a query arrives at the server, QuickDNS
interrupts whatever else is happening and takes care of the packet.
That may mean sending out another query, and nearly always means
sending some sort of outgoing packet. So for handling queries, it
doesn't matter whether the server is frontmost, hidden, or whatever.
It updates its statistics window, writes log entries, scans the data
folder, etc., at normal idle time. Since these are non-critical
operations, it makes sense to give them lower priority; this can be
done by bringing something else (like EIMS) to the foreground.
I'm pretty sure that Classic Mac OS has had this ability since System
7 or thereabouts - some things are time-sliced (cooperative
multitasking), while others are preemptive. Interrupts, like mouse
movement, keystrokes, and incoming network packets, are handled
preemptively. However, there are a lot of things that can't be done
at interrupt time, like using the filesystem (except possibly by the
virtual memory engine - I'm not sure).
