A load balance record named 'www' will not have any conflict with a
CNAME record named '*'. You can leave the CNAME record in place.

Yes. While both servers are operational, in the former case, one
server will get approximately 0.01% of the traffic; in the latter
case, it will get approximately 1% of the traffic, which is 100 times
more.
