In general, you don't need to go to the server and hit restart every
time you make a change to a zone. QuickDNS Pro, as of 3.0.1,
automatically reloads just that zone immediately after you save the
change. The slave server reloads after a few seconds, as well, if
you're connected to it in Manager.

It should be faster - not a great deal faster, but a little. Please
send an Apple System Profiler report (from the server) with your
MacsBug log.
