It is allowable that an MX record points to xxx.com (as far as I'm aware.)
However, creating a MX record for a hostname mail.xxx.com (which may point
to the same IP address of xxx.com) can be very convenient if you ever need
to separate your mail server from your, e.g., web server.

For example, we recently needed to move one client's POP accounts from our
primary (Linux) server to our secondary (MacOS) server. This was only a
matter of changing the IP address for the mail.xxx.com record (and of course
setting up the accounts on the Mac :-).

If you manage more than 25 domains, you can open an account with OpenSRS
(opensrs.com).

In addition to fast updates, this organization provides you with access to
wholesale domain registration rates ($10/domain) and provides an
advertisement-free web-based management interface that even lets you create
sub-accounts for your clients to manage any domain records that you allow
them to manage (like the Admin Contact record.) You can collect multiple
domains under the same 'profile' so that changing your technical contact
details affects all domains, etc.

It's very nice in my opinion.

Hope this helps.
