DNS Server HostnamesFrom: John May Date: Friday, June 1, 2001
Time: 10:10:22 amI think I already know the answer to this one, but I wanted to
double-check to be sure:
We've got a client that is interested in reselling their service, and
would like to have the associated hostnames for various services to
be customized to their company. With services such as FTP, mail,
etc. this is easy - simply assign A records within their domain for
their ftp.theirhostname.com, mail.theirhostname.com, etc. addresses.
However, I believe nameservers are a different issue. AFAIK, each
nameserver can only have one hostname. This means that they would be
forced to use our ns1.pointinspace.com and ns2.pointinspace.com
hostnames unless we set up completely separate DNS machines for them.
I'm under the impression that I couldn't add ns1.theirhostname.com,
ns2.theirhostname.com, etc. records to their domain and point them at
the same IPs as our ns1.pointinspace.com, etc. DNS servers - then
assign them to their DNS names in the registrar's records.
Am I correct in this assumption, or is there some way to do what I
think is not possible?
