The problem is, if you are making your internal DNS authoritative for the zone [for your LAN], and don't enter the www CNAME or A record, that DNS server will answer no such server [no second try]. You would have to duplicate ALL the records you want to be active. You might make the external server a slave [secondary] of the internal server to ease administration.
