can you have two mail servers? From: john Date: Monday, June 4, 2001
Time: 10:20:36 pmis it possible for a domain to have two distinct mail servers?
I know about the MX preferences/priorities..how to set up a back up server.
BUT... what i want is this:
mail.shortclip.com 00.00.00.000
mail3.shortclip.com 00.00.00.001
and two separate accounts ie: someone@shortclip.com and
someoneElse@mail3.shortclip.com
so that mail3.shortclip.com goes to it's own box with it's own IP?
For instance if I want to spread users over two boxes, each with its
own server, but essentially under the same domain name? How do I do
that? Is it even possible?
Do I set up two MX records with the same priority, but that resolve
to two differnt IP's?
shortclip.com MX 10 mail.shortclip.com (main server)
shortclip.com MX 20 mail2.shortclip.com (back-up server)
mail.shortclip.com A 24.147.23.107
mail2.shortclip.com A 24.147.23.105
mail3.shortclip.com MX 10 mail3.shortclip.com
(alternate server?) This line I think is NOT right???? What goes
in the bold part?
mail3.shortclip.com A 24.147.23.xxx
As it is now mail2 only kicks in if mail.shortclip.com is down, correct?
How do I get mail. and mail3. BOTH to work at the same time, not
instead of one or the the other?
Sorry if this is confusing or ignorant.
Thanks
john
