Re: Secondary Server - & the QDNS manualFrom: micaelac Date: Monday, June 18, 2001
Time: 3:59:25 pmIn reference to use of the manual, I think that the problem below was a good
illustration of what I am talking about when I say that I think the manual
could use a little more "environmental" info. "This is where you have to be
to get to where you want to be" sort of thing.
I know from being a graphic designer at one time that what is in front of
your face for months and months becomes so familiar that you can't see how
it looks to the uninitiated or first-time observer. You lose perspective,
and big picture items get buried in all the details.
Good luck with manual

I had also read these remarks before and couldn't figure it but I tried
again and finally I figured out where I was going wrong. I was trying to do
all this through the primary server instead of as follows:
Connect to primary server (master) and set up zone.
Disconnect from primary and connect to secondary (slave)
then follow the instructions in the manual:
select the server in the Manager window. Then, from the Server menu, select
"Add Slave Zone...". The steps to take should be obvious from there.
and indeed the steps are then obvious.
....
And our documentation guy gets more depressed, because nobody reads his
manual...
Anyway, select the server in the Manager window. Then, from the Server menu,
select "Add Slave Zone...". The steps to take should be obvious from there.

Trying to sort this out:
When you create a new zone, if you're connected to both master and slave
servers when you create the zone, you can configure all servers in one step.
Are you saying that you have to be connected to both at the same time? I
would have thought it should be possible to open up the secondary (slave!)
server and tell it to creat a secondary domain from the master. The only
way I seem to be able to do this is go to the slave server computer, double
click on 'Secondary Domains' (which opens up the 2.2.1 Pro Admin!!) and then
enter the new domain name as before. It must now be possible to do this
remotely and what I have read going back on the list seems to suggest so -
back to my first question - is this only possible when both servers are
remotely connected at the same time or am I missing a key step?
Thanks
