I actually had a meeting with FileMaker, Inc. a few months ago about
something similar. It was mostly about the fact that the 4.0 runtime has
no networking, and it was going to push developers away if they don't
change that.
So, in any case, a compromise looks like a compromise will happen for
version 5.0 of FileMaker... FileMaker Pro Server will be less expensive
(like $300 or so), but there will be a per concurrent user charge, like
maybe $40 or something. And in turn, they will add the networkability
back into FileMaker Pro Runtime 5.0. So, they get a per-seat fee and we
get networkability in the latest runtime. Which in turn would allows for
the ODBC/SQL stuff without any extra charge since it's part of 5.0.
Who knows though... {shrug} That's what they SAY, and it's not under my
control unforunately... :-)
