Re: MacOS X Case-Sensitive DNS lookup bugFrom: Administrator Date: Wednesday, July 11, 2001
Time: 9:43:27 amHi there,
Back in May, I sent a message to the list about a problem with OS X
and uppercase domain names. The consensus on the list was that this
was not a DNS server problem, but an OS problem and definately a bug.
I've been waiting for a fix and 10.0.4 didn't do it, so I sent my bug
report to several Mac sites (MacInTouch, MacNN, etc). No one can seem
to duplicate the problem. So yesterday, I took a PowerBook with OS X
home and ran the same tests over my DSL connection and found that I
could not duplicate the problem. When I switched to the DNS servers
at work, the problem exists. At work today, I've switched DNS servers
and now my machine is working fine. So my question is why is my DNS
server (QuickDNS v2.2.1) failing on uppercase domain name lookups,
but only with Mac OS X clients? If I use dns.aladdinsys.com or
dns2.aladdinsys.com as my DNS server the tests fail as shown below.
If I switch to my ISPs DNS server, 216.52.1.1, which is just one hop
up, the tests are successful. (examples are at the end of this
message...) What's up with that?

Here is the message that I sent to MacNN, MacInTouch, etc...:

THE BUG
=======
Sites like "http://www.FaxBee.com" are inaccessible under Mac OS X
(iCab error: Server "www.FaxBee.com" is unknown...). If the domain is
retyped in lowercase, it works, but with the above site, the graphics
on the page don't load because they reference a site with a capital
letter in the domain name (www.Danowitz.com). Some browsers
circumvent the problem. Internet Explorer will not show an error with
uppercase names if a lowercase name of the same site exists in either
the browser's cache or its bookmark list. This problem is
system-wide, it is not limited to web-browsers. I discovered the
problem while using the Eudora beta for OS X.
Messages on the QuickDNS list confirm that others are having the same
problem. You can search the archives here for more info:

If you want to see the bug for yourself, try the following:
Using Mac OS X's Lookupd as described here:
<http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n24902>
The following searches should all be successful, but only the one in
lower-case letters is.
