What I was hoping to do was reduce the down time for people who are
collecting mail from the new server. They will not change any server
details, as the name will stay the same, but the IP will be different.
If I reduce the TTL for the mail server only, will this new IP address
reach them faster after I've changed it than if I left it the same?

I don't want people to complain about not being able to check mail
because their DNS data still points to the now useless backup.
