The serial number for a zone can be anything, as long as it increments each
time the zone is updated. It's checked by slave servers to determine whether
or not the zone has changed since the last time the slave got a zone transfer.
If the serial number has been incremented, the slave will do a zone transfer
to get the new version of the zone. Serial numbers often reflect the date when
the zone was edited, although they don't have to. E.g., if you edited a zone
this morning, you might serialize it as 200109041. If you edit it again later
today, you might increment it to 200109042. You don't really need to worry too
much about what the number is, QuickDNS increments it for you automagically
whenever you edit a zone.
