You could probably get a temporary WebSTAR serial number from 4D. Or
you could get a temporary key for QuickDNS from us, and move the DNS
server.
When changing an IP address, the optimal sequence of events is:
- Look at your record's TTL. (You may need to select Show TTL from
the Zone window in order to see it.) This is not any of the values at
the top of the zone, but rather the value in the TTL column in the A
record itself. If there is no value specified, then look at the
Minimum (or Default TTL) value at the top of the zone, as this is the
value that's used when the record has no explicit TTL of its own. The
value that you find is how far in advance of the change you need to
prepare.
- To prepare, set the TTL of the A record to a lower value (e.g. 5
minutes, or 300 seconds). Do not set the zone's SOA record's TTL to a
different value, and do not change the Minimum or Default TTL value,
as the SOA's TTL won't affect anything you're doing, and the other
will affect the entire zone.
- Now wait for the old TTL to expire. This is that original TTL value
from the first step. Once that amount of time has passed, the DNS
resolvers of the world (other than AOL's, about which there is little
you can do) will have your new, shorter TTL in their cache (assuming
they have your record in cache at all).
- Set up the new server. If possible, leave the old server running, too.
- Make the change. Change the A record's IP address. Also, reset the
record's TTL to whatever it was before (probably blank).
- If you left the old server running, wait for the interim, shorter
TTL to expire, then take it down.
Note that, as mentioned in the third step, AOL will ignore your TTL's
and cache your records for weeks at a time. So you may want to leave
the old server in place for a few weeks.
