Most of the time you have just a single merchant account. Like do you
dial into the same network to authorize all card types, or do you have to
dial a different network for each card type?

That's correct... except the hub also does away with the Payment Queue,
since it can hold the line open while authorizing each transaction so it
knows in real-time if it was approved or not. Plus the hub does some
other neat things, like auto-settlement of batches, etc.
And if gives you room to expand for the future...
Basically it's this... for the extra $100, it does away with the payment
queue, you can authorize from any workstation in real-time, auto-settles
batches and gives you something you can always expand on later if needed.

I suppose you could... But I've never tried it, so don't take my word for
it... Each computer would need a modem, each computer would need PC
Authorize installed on it and you would have to remeber to settle each
batch on each computer every day.
I think your reports would be wacky too... since you would have to run
reports from each workstation and then manually total them if you ever
wanted to run reports.
The Hub is just cool because it also gives you a central authorization
computer (so you can see what's going on centrally and you only need a
single modem).

Usually 2 days.
