moving ISPs, for the nth time...From: Claude Errera Date: Wednesday, January 2, 2002
Time: 2:06:21 pmOkay, I know this has been covered before, I just spent a couple
of hours browsing the archives. ;) However... I didn't run across
any posts that COMPLETELY answered my questions, so I thought I'd
try posting.
I'm currently in the process of switching ISPs. At the moment (and
for the next two weeks or so), I have both subnets active. I've
taken the opportunity to move over almost all addresses so far...
but the two DNS servers are giving me headaches.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to minimize downtime without
inconveniencing clients too much. Part of the problem is that I
don't have access to many of the registration records; I have to
ask the clients to make changes with their registrars. So I want
to minimize the effort involved there, too. :)
There are currently 2 dns servers; a primary and a secondary. Is
there any way to keep, say, the secondary up and running on the
old address for a few days, while the primary shifts over to the
new subnet? Is it that simple? (Move one, not the other?) Do I
submit IP address changes for both servers simultaneously (or
ask clients to do it), or do I need to do one, then the other a
few days later?
Ideally, except for having to visit their registrar, I want this
to be as seamless as possible for the clients. Any help here would
be much appreciated. :)
