I misstated myself saying they were separate zones, since to have a zone
you need NS delegation records and another zone file.

My point, more precisely, was that each hostname on the left side can have
its own MX record.

IIUC, you need 3 mx's, that point stands, for:

officemedic.net
lists.officemedic.net
mx1.officemedic.net (or mail, if you prefer)

every hostname needs an A record somewhere. you can't have too many MX
records.
