mailserver A''s/CNAME''sFrom: andrew Date: Wednesday, January 9, 2002
Time: 12:50:17 pmHi All:
I've been having some problems with AOL rejecting mail from my mailserver.
My configuration is quite simple, I have POP and SMTP running off the same
server.
I have an A record in the domain for the SMTP name of the server
("mail.xyz.com"), and I have a PTR record in the reverse domain for
"mail.xyz.com".
Now, I tell all my clients to use "pop.xyz.com" for POP, and "mail.xyz.com" for
SMTP...I don't have a good reason for this, except that it seems other people do
this and who knows, maybe I'll split it between two servers in the future.
The real question is, to avoid reverse lookup problems with AOL, should
"pop.xyz.com" be an A record pointing to the IP address of the server, or a
CNAME record pointing to "mail.xyz.com"
I assume that it's a bad idea to have 2 A records and 2 PTR records both
pointing at the same IP.
TIA, Andrew
