Giving yourself the option of splitting POP and SMTP off onto separate
machines is a valid reason for doing that. As long as their on the same box,
though, POP clients can use either name.

It's not a bad idea to have two (or more) A records pointing the same IP
address. In fact, it's quite common. It _is_ a bad idea to have two PTR's for
the same IP address. AFAIK, it's legal according to the RFCs, but it can lead
to problems and is definitely not recommended (kind of like chaining CNAMEs).
In your case, the PTR for your mail server should point to the name that's
used for it in MX records (i.e., mail.xyz.com.).
