Re: EIMS and QDNS-->same box? From: Hazlitt Krog Date: Friday, January 11, 2002
Time: 12:10:11 pmMy comments, and a question at the bottom on a related topic...
I've been running EIMS and QDNS together on the same box since 1998
with no problems. Originally I had EIMS 2.x and QDNS 2.x on a 7250 w/
48 MB RAM. Currently I have EIMS 3.0 and QDNS 3.5.3 on a beige G3/266
w/192 MB RAM and Mac OS 9.0.4. It hasn't crashed in years after I
figured out to have the machine shut down and start up once a week
early each Sunday morning. It may crash after a few weeks of no
restarts, but that's true of all Mac servers to my knowledge.
I use PageSentry OneSite 4.0 running on my WebTen system to monitor
my key servers and provide restarts on that system. I highly
recommend this utility to keep tabs on server availability since it
can send emails to your desktop or your email-enabled mobile device
whenever your server becomes unavailable. It also has a crash restart
capability when used with a PowerKey Pro, and a programmable restart
that is superior to the Mac OS shut down / start up feature in the
Energy Saver Control Panel. Page Sentry and PowerKey have made the
Admin part of my life so much less stressful.
I run my secondary QDNS on a 6100 w/ 40 MB RAM and Mac OS 8.5.1. It's
very stable, but does require occasional restarting to avoid freezes,
and unfortunately the Energy Saver Control Panel does not work for
the 6100 series Macs, so I restart manually every so often, at least
once a month. Is there an AppleScript that will restart a 6100 on a
regular basis, or do I need to license another copy of PageSentry?
