SMTP and POP cname records??

I was doing reading on the list , and saw the suggestion for setting
up multiple records for mail
I would like to ask the list if this is the proper setup

for the main domain
ie
domain.com MX 10 mail.domain.com
mail.domain.com A 123.125.152.201

Then set up

smtp.domain.com cname mail.domain.com
pop.domain.com cname mail.domain.com

thus allowing for future expanability ( ie adding a server strictly
for POP, or SMTP)

For a virtual domain , would i leave the setup as is
ie
virtualdomain.com MX 10 mail.domain.com

Does this all make sense??, I think this is a good idea, and want to
start moving my clients over to using the pop.domain.com for
receiving email, and the smtp.domain.com for sending before the
transition gets to big.

Thanks
